The purpose of this research is to provide an explanation of why people living around Mt. Shasta maintain a mythology explaining the origin and purpose of humankind connected to Atlantis and Lemuria. Accounts are based in historical and occult materials, personal narratives of transformative experiences and paranormal phenomena.
The results are that people in this area accommodate a worldview that is not based on the rationalism as outlined during the Enlightenment era. Myths construct part of a worldview that differs from the dominant culture.
