In 1971, my mom lived in Santa Barbara, CA, and met a woman at work named Jerry. Jerry had lived in McCloud, on the eastern side of Mount Shasta, and described the lights that went up the mountain (never down) as the Menehune, or small people. These small people only worked at night and sometimes left their tools on the trail. They also had small bells that would tinkle.
I can find no other account of Menehune on Mount Shasta except for this story I grew up listening to. If anything, it is a testament to the strange phenomena on the mountain that are called by different names, like the Menehune, the Yaktavians, Lemurians, etc. The similarities between the Menehune of Hawaii and those little people of Mount Shasta are very similar. Maybe some navigated from Polynesia in the last flood and landed in the mountains?
