The occultists of the Romantic Period (1798-1837) considered the North American Native American civilizations post-destruction colonies of Atlantis. Thus, all Indigenous groups were seen as immigrants from Atlantis.
Native Americans have also been named descendants of the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Assyrians, East Indians, Polynesians, Prince Madoc, a Welshman who supposedly crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1170, and a distinct line of monkeys and apes unique to the New World. These apes and monkeys were the descendants of the giant apes Gigantanthropus and Meganthropus, common in southeastern Asia in the early Pleistocene.
Commonly, it is believed the indigenous groups of the Americas were the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel or fleeing inhabitants of the sunken Atlantis.
