The Mount Shasta–Lemuria connection became especially influential through the writings of Guy Ballard, who claimed in the 1930s to have encountered an ascended master named Saint Germain on Mount Shasta. His accounts helped establish the mountain as an important location in modern occult and New Age traditions.
There is no archaeological evidence establishing that Lemuria or the underground city of Telos exists. The story is best understood as an esoteric tradition that became deeply associated with Mount Shasta and continues to influence the mountain’s mythology today.
The Ascended Masters
In the 1930s, Guy Ballard, founder of the “I AM” Activity movement, claimed that he encountered the Ascended Master Saint Germain on Mount Shasta. Ballard’s writings helped establish Mount Shasta as an important location in modern occult and New Age traditions. UFO Sightings
Mount Shasta has a long history of reported UFO sightings and unexplained lights. Some modern accounts connect these reports to the legend of Telos and other Mount Shasta stories about hidden civilizations, while others remain unexplained.
Bigfoot Encounters
The forests around Mount Shasta have been the setting for numerous reported Bigfoot encounters. Witnesses describe seeing large, ape-like figures, hearing unexplained vocalizations, and finding unusual tracks or other signs in remote areas. Bigfoot reports are part of the broader folklore surrounding Mount Shasta, although the existence of an unknown primate has not been scientifically established.
The J.C. Brown Legend
The J.C. Brown legend is one of Mount Shasta’s strangest underground mysteries. In 1904, a prospector named J. C. Brown reportedly claimed to have discovered a large tunnel leading deep into Mount Shasta. According to later accounts, Brown described an underground civilization and a hidden city beneath the mountain. Years later, an expedition was reportedly organized to find the entrance, but Brown disappeared before he could lead the group into the mountain.
The story has been repeated for generations, but the alleged tunnel and underground city have never been verified. No archaeological evidence has established the existence of Brown’s hidden civilization. Even so, the mystery remains one of the most enduring legends in Mount Shasta’s paranormal history.
Hollow Earth Theory
The Hollow Earth theory imagines that the Earth contains vast interior spaces, hidden civilizations, or entrances to an underground world. Mount Shasta became connected to these ideas through legends of tunnels, hidden cities, Lemurians, and other beings supposedly living beneath the mountain. Some modern accounts link Mount Shasta’s underground mythology to Telos and to the belief that advanced beings inhabit a hidden realm beneath the surface.
There is no scientific evidence that Mount Shasta contains an entrance to a Hollow Earth or an underground civilization. The theory belongs to the broader tradition of esoteric and paranormal mythology that has developed around the mountain over the past century.
Strange Mount Shasta Clouds
Mount Shasta’s unusual cloud formations are another source of mystery surrounding the mountain. The most distinctive are lenticular clouds—smooth, saucer-shaped formations that can appear to hover almost motionless near the summit. The U.S. Geological Survey explains that these clouds form when moist air flows up the mountain, cools, and condenses, creating atmospheric formations that can look remarkably like flying saucers.
Because of their unusual appearance, lenticular clouds have sometimes been incorporated into Mount Shasta’s UFO mythology. The creature is typically described as a large, dark, winged humanoid with glowing red eyes, combining characteristics of Bigfoot and a giant bat. Reports and stories about Batsquatch have circulated among paranormal enthusiasts, adding another layer to Mount Shasta’s reputation for unexplained creatures.
Unlike the mountain’s older Indigenous traditions and later spiritual movements, Batsquatch is a relatively modern cryptid legend. No physical evidence has been found to establish the existence of such a creature, and reported sightings remain unverified. Nevertheless, the story has become part of the growing collection of mysterious beings associated with the forests and wilderness around Mount Shasta.
Spiritual Energy Vortex
New Age and spiritual communities widely regard Mount Shasta as an energy vortex, which is a place believed to possess unusual spiritual or transformative energy. Visitors have associated the mountain with meditation, healing, chakras, crystals, sacred geography, and personal spiritual experiences. These beliefs have become an important part of Mount Shasta’s modern identity as a destination for spiritual seekers.
The idea of a Mount Shasta energy vortex is a spiritual belief rather than a scientifically established phenomenon. There is no accepted scientific measurement demonstrating that the mountain produces a unique spiritual energy field. Even so, the belief has become one of the most enduring modern traditions surrounding Mount Shasta and has influenced how many visitors experience the landscape.
Klamath Traditions and Mount Shasta
Long before Mount Shasta became associated with Lemuria, UFOs, Bigfoot, and modern New Age beliefs, the mountain existed within an Indigenous cultural landscape. Klamath traditions connect Mount Shasta with powerful spiritual beings and with the broader sacred geography of the Klamath Basin. In one traditional account preserved by the Klamath Tribes, the spirit being Skell stands atop Mount Shasta during a great battle with Llao, the spirit associated with the Below World and Mount Mazama. The conflict is part of the traditional explanation for the formation of Crater Lake.
The story is important because it shows that Mount Shasta’s spiritual significance predates the modern legends that later became attached to the mountain. Klamath, Modoc, and other Indigenous peoples maintained longstanding cultural relationships with the region, and Mount Shasta appears within this larger sacred landscape. Why Does Mount Shasta Remain So Mysterious?
Mount Shasta’s mystery comes from more than any single legend. Indigenous traditions, nineteenth- and twentieth-century spiritual movements, lost-city stories, cryptid reports, UFO sightings and the mountain’s dramatic volcanic landscape have accumulated around the peak for generations.
Some stories can be traced through historical documents. Others survive primarily through oral tradition, eyewitness accounts and modern spiritual belief. What they share is the idea that Mount Shasta is more than a physical landmark—it has become a cultural landscape onto which generations of people have projected stories about hidden worlds, spiritual transformation and the unknown.
That is ultimately what makes Mount Shasta so fascinating: the mystery is not one story, but the layers of stories that have accumulated around the mountain.
